Tonight we had an absolutely packed house with over 50 boys plus our student leaders and adult volunteers. We finished our month talking about fairness (our Character Matters topic of the month).

JUNIOR HIGH YOUTHQUEST
We had a full night tonight. We started off by doing a group activity, then moved on to share about our Kingdom Experiment. We are on chapter 4 now, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6). Many of the youth shared stories of how God was stretching them through the various challenges. The most popular one was, 'The big Book. Enough said.' They committed to reading parts of the Bible expecting God to teach them something. Some read Matthew 5-7, others Psalm 119, etc. Then we had a "wrap" party where we wrapped 300 thank-you gifts for our guests who will be coming to our fundraising concert on February 8.
Next we introduced chapter 5 of the Kingdom Experiment, "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." We'll be doing these experiments for the next two weeks. We ended our time with a rap :)

SENIOR HIGH YOUTHQUEST
Last night we got back to our Kingdom Experiment. We were focusing on chapters 5 and 6
Chapter 5 - Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Chapter 6 - Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
We watched a video called, "The Story of God." It's a summary of the entire Bible through spoken word.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=E4cL-Zcxa9M
We also read and talked about the Apostles Creed and did a group building activity - the students had to pretend they had just crashed in an airplane in Northern Canada. Given 12 items, they had to rank them in order of importance (individually and then as a group).
We ended our time by watching a very inspirational video about Nick Vijicic - a motivational speaker born without any limbs.

YOUTHQUEST BASKETBALL
Last night we had a full house of boys (48 boys playing and 9 student leaders). We continued talking about Fairness - We are sensitive to the need of each individual. We treat each other as we wish to be treated. We interact with others without stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination. We stand up for human rights.
This week our focus was on being sensitive to the needs of each individual. We challenged the students to pick one person at their school who they could treat better. We also had a great game of basketball as well. The senior session ended in a tie (Even after overtime!)

We gathered at Markham Village Community Centre for our 1st meeting of the new year. We continued our journey through the book, "The Kingdom Experiment." We took up our experiments from chapter 3 and started chapter 4. Here's one of the experiments the youth did,
The last experiment involved encouraging someone who is under appreciated. My friend and I crafted and gave an anonymous thank you card for their school janitors. They signed it "The Positivity Enforcement Ninjas." - 13 year old from our church.

Back after the Christmas break!
This month, we are talking to the boys about the Character Matters trait of fairness:
"We are sensitive to the needs of each individual. We treat each other as we want to be treated ourselves. We interact with others without stereotyping, prejudice, or discrimination. We stand up for human rights."
We talked about how our program is different from the other places that they play because of our focus on character and making space for people of all skill levels. Both sessions had a great night. The junior session was decided by 2 points and the senior session was decided by 1 point. This happened while involving all players regardless of the level of basketball skills. Here's a quote from one of the students off Facebook,
"By far one of the best and memorable games ever played at Cornerstone YouthQuest Basketball." - Ali Haider
